The provision of decent and affordable housing units to Nigerians, especially the low income earners, had been an unaccomplished problem over the years. In realizing its goal towards solving housing needs of the citizenry, Ogun State Government has shown determination towards making social housing provision a right of its citizens.
In an effort aimed at addressing the perennial housing deficit in the state, Ogun State Government is partnering with Federal Government to provide 10,000 houses to the people under the Social Housing Scheme.
As a result of this, the State Government has also declared its determination to construct and deliver not fewer than 2,500 housing units across the state.
The Dapo Abiodun-led administration is turning the State around and has pledged to make Civil Servants and the underprivileged in Ogun State to become house owners. The process of acquisition has been simplified together with that of obtaining the Certificate of Ownership.
The State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun stated this at the 3rd Annual General Meeting of The Gateway Mortgage Bank. He said Housing delivery plays a more critical role in the welfare of a nation, as it directly influences not only the citizenry, but also plays major role on the performance of other sectors of the economy.
Prince Abiodun made it known that the ongoing construction of 2,500 housing units in different parts of the state was in recognition of the fact that decent and affordable accommodation was the right of the people.
“The right of adequate shelter has been recognized and enshrined in numerous international instruments and conventions by the most recognized governments around the world and Nigeria is no exception”.
“Consequently, programs of assistance in the area of finance and provision of infrastructure have been designed by the government to enhance delivery”.
“For us as an administration, in recognition of the fact that decent and affordable accommodation is a human right issue, hence, we have commenced also our 2,500 units of affordable housing scheme, to alleviate the crises of accommodation in our State as well as part of our economic sustainability. We are also in partnership with the Federal Government for another 10,000 Social Housing Scheme”, he noted.
The Governor urged the management of the bank to provide unique and excellent mortgage finance services to its customers by bringing to bear their managerial acumen by collaborating and making the aspirations a win -win for their investors and customers.
The State Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Jamiu Akande Omoniyi FCA confirmed the State Government’s commitment in the provision of housing units to the residents of the State at affordable prices in an interview with Great Achiever’s World magazine, in Abeokuta. The strides in housing in the State have arguably enhanced the State‘s Urban Renewal Drive.
It is these achievements in the housing sector in Ogun State that Housing Development Advocacy Network awarded Governor Dapo Abiodun as the Housing Friendly Governor of the Year and Jagunmolu Jamiu Akande Omoniyi as Housing Commissioner of the Year at the Nigeria Housing Awards, 2020
